What to do after a Car Accident
Car accidents happen every day. Don’t be surprised when it happens to you. If you are hurt or shaken up you must be prepared and know what to do. At Insurance Connections Agency, Inc. in Larchmont, NY, we want you to know how to protect yourself if and when it happens.
Check for Injuries
Check yourself and your passengers for injuries Immediately following an accident. If there are any injuries, call 911 at once. Be calm and explain to the dispacher your location and what happened. Find out if any other drivers or passengers are injured. Tell the operator how many people are
injured, so they can relay that information to the first responders.
Take some photos
If you need to move your car, try your best to take photos of the accident scene before you do. This could be key to determining who is at fault. Try to take a photo from far away enough so an insurance adjuster can see the placement of the vehicles.
Safely Move Your Car
If there are no injuries, move your vehicle to the roadside or shoulder. Doing so will prevent the possibility of another incident or accident. Turn on your flashing lights and wait for the police. Document the Accident if possible, Get the names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone involved in the accident as well as the name of the responding police officers on the scene. Take pictures of all of the vehicles and their damages. Photograph the area where the incident took place. Write down the license plate and driver’s license numbers of the vehicle and driver. Remember to
exchange insurance information. If possible, use your cell phone camera to take pictures of drivers licenses, license plates, insurance cards and/or registrations.
Contact your insurance company
Contact your insurance company to let them know that you were involved in an accident. When you do so, you will provide the first report of the incident. Typically, they will give you a claim number and let you know that an insurance adjuster will call you within the next 24 hours provided is not a weekend.
